Transient Ischemic Attack

Transient Ischemic Attack

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), also known as “mini-stroke,” is caused by a blood clot in the brain that is temporary (or transient). Most TIAs last about 5 minutes and it is considered a warning sign of an impending stroke. The warning signs of TIA are similar to that of a stroke:  sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion or trouble speaking, sudden trouble walking, sudden severe headache with no known cause and sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

The best action to take if you experience any of these symptoms is to dial 9-1-1 and get to the emergency room ASAP.

Don't Put Off Getting Your Eyes Examined

Don't Put off Getting your Eye's Examined

How important is your vision?  Most people would say that it is very important to them and that loss of this precious sense would be devastating.  Yet many people put off getting their eyes examined until they experience a visual symptom, such as, difficulty reading small print. What they don’t know is that there are several eye diseases which do not cause any symptoms during the early stages. Furthermore, many people are not aware that effective treatments exist for some sight-threatening conditions. Also, they are unaware of the fact that family history and lifestyle can put them at a higher risk of developing a sight-threatening condition.

Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy are some common conditions that can rob someone of their vision.

Routine Eye Examinations can reveal eye disease in its early stage when therapy may be beneficial. The Eye Physician can often detect serious underlying systemic diseases such as Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis or brain tumors.

As you can see (I hope), annual routine eye exams are of the utmost importance!

Google Glasses

I use Google products probably dozens of times every day. They recently announced a new project called Google Glasses. Even though it may take a long time before it becomes a reality, it would be a really cool gadget to use. I can't wait to get a pair. For more info, just Google it!

Glaucoma Implant Sugery

On April 3rd Dr. Ilya Rozenbaum performed a glaucoma implant operation using the newest tube shunt implant called Molteno 3.1 designed to lower the eye pressure. The surgery went well and the patient is doing well. As new types of glaucoma implants become available, glaucoma patients have more options for controlling their disease.

Vitamin D-3 Rejuvenates Aging Eyes

According to a study published in the January edition of Neurobiology of Aging, Vitamin D-3 appears to protect against age-related vision loss.  The researchers evaluated middle-aged mice that took the vitamin for six weeks and found significant decreases in retinal inflammation and levels of amyloid beta, a substance associated with aging.  They also found substantial reductions in the number of retinal macrophages.  These changes led to a significant improvement in visual function in the mice.  Since excess amyloid beta accumulation and inflammation are risk factors leading to Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the study concludes that Vitamin D-3 is a way to slow the pace of age-related visual decline and may help protect against AMD.
