5 Common Glaucoma Tests

Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness in the US. It affects millions of people. Unfortunately, many people don't know that they have glaucoma. Regular eye exams are important for early detection and treatment of this condition. After your comprehensive eye exam, you may be referred to a glaucoma specialist who may use several tests to diagnose and treat glaucoma. Specialists look at many factors before making decisions about treatment.

Five factors are tested before making a glaucoma diagnosis:

Tonometry – measures inner eye pressure.
Ophthalmoscopy – examines the shape and color of the optic nerve.
Perimetry- (visual field test) tests a patient’s complete field of vision.
Gonioscopy – examination of the drainage channels inside the eye.
Pachymetry – detects the thickness of the cornea.

The only treatment proven to stop glaucoma is lowering the pressure inside the eye. There are different ways to lower the eye pressure, and treatment options vary depending on the severity and type of glaucoma. Your doctor will determine the most appropriate treatment for you.

Dry Eye Syndrome and Diabetes

Diabetes is a tough disease since it effects almost every organ in the body.  As far as the eyes go, diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness.  As a result, all diabetic patients are sent by their primary care doctors to have yearly dilated eye exams by an ophthalmologist.  However, Dry Eye Syndrome is also very common with diabetics and this tends to be very symptomatic in this population.  This less devastating eye problem should not be ignored in the diabetic patient.
