Nutrition and the Eyes
There are certain nutrients that can help keep the eye healthy and prevent eye disease.
Some of these include:
Omega 3 fatty acids- Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in fish or taken as a supplement. Fish high in omega 3 include sardines, salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Omega 3 fatty acids can help improve dryness in the eyes. The can also decrease the risk and progression of macular degeneration.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin- These are important nutrients found in green leafy vegetables or can be taken as a supplement. Lutein and Zeaxanthin can reduce the risk of macular degeneration and also slow down its progression.
Vitamin C - An antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C can lower the risk of cataract formation.
Zinc- Zinc is found in food sources such as oysters, tofu, wheat germ, and beef. Zinc has been shown to protect eyes against macular degeneration and night blindness.

Smartphone Apps Could Improve Effectiveness of Weight-Loss Programs
People in weight-loss programs who use smartphone applications to track their food intake and exercise levels might lose more weight than program participants who do not use the mobile technology, according to a recent study reported in U.S. News & World Report. Researchers believe that just by making an effort to measure weight loss people tend to lose weight. Keep your eyes peeled for many more positive health effects from phone apps in the years to come.

Decrease in Automobile Accidents After Cataract Surgery
According to a recent study in the journal Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology motor vehicle accidents involving men decreased by 15% in the 12 months following cataract surgery. In the study, men were drivers in 1,124 of the crashes, of which 611 occurred before surgery and 513 after surgery. The frequency of motor vehicle accidents in women did not change significantly after cataract surgery (of 638 total crashes 330 were before surgery and 308 were after surgery). According to the study men tend to report better outcomes after cataract surgery but this was the first study to show differences between men and women in the risks of automobile crashes after surgery. Weekly driving mileage also remained greater in men than women 3 months after the surgery. Time of day or weather was not documented in this study.
