Implant Options

At Matossian Eye Associates, we offer the latest in technology to customize implant calculations for each eye in order to maximize visual outcomes. We employ a combination of the OPD III and the Cassini Topography to measure and diagnose your corneal spherical aberration and total corneal astigmatism much more thoroughly than has ever been possible before. With these measurements, we match the implant to your eye as accurately as possible, based on your individual needs.

Monofocal Lenses

A monofocal lens is the most common type of implant used for lens surgery. It provides clear vision at one focal point. The power can be selected so you can see fairly clearly in the distance or up close, but you will not be able to see both at the same time in the same eye. You may choose the following:

  • Both eyes are set to see at distance. You will need glasses to correct astigmatism and any other residual focusing problem, if present. You will need glasses in order to read or see a computer screen at all times.
  • One eye is set for distance and one for intermediate (Blended Vision). Vision is good for distance and for the computer, but you will need glasses to see fine print up close.
  • One eye is set for distance and one eye is set for near (Monovision). Vision is fairly good for distance and up close. You will need to wear glasses to fine tune distance or near. Intermediate or computer vision (3 – 5 feet) is poor. You will need glasses to see the computer screen.

For the blended vision option, Matossian Eye Associates offers the Softec HD™ and Softec HDO™ IOLs. These bi-aspheric lenses, similar to those used in high-end binoculars and cameras, are specially designed to mimic the natural focusing ability of the eye. They are calculated to match your eyes with the dominant eye aimed for distance and the non-dominant eye aimed for intermediate vision (examples that fall in the intermediate range are: the dashboard, computer monitor, GPS, speedometer, kitchen counter, plate of food) but, to read up close, you will need to wear glasses.

Multifocal Lenses

A Multifocal lens, also known as a presbyopia-correcting lens, allows you to focus on both near and far objects and provides you with the best option of decreased dependence on glasses. Some multifocal lenses have optical properties that also allow you to see the intermediate range for things such as the computer, cell phones, price tags, and cooking. These implants are ideal if you do not wish to rely on glasses all the time. A multifocal lens can be implanted whether or not a cataract is present. Most persons over 40 have presbyopia, the inability to read up close without glasses. If you are a candidate, these presbyopia-correcting implants may allow you to see far (driving), intermediate (computer or cooking), and near (up close reading) with less reliance on spectacles.


The multifocal lenses that Matossian Eye Associates offers are the Tecnis® Multifocal and AcrySof IQ ReSTOR® multifocal IOLs. These lenses use technology similar to that found in telescopes and microscopes to provide sharp, clear vision at a variety of distances. In addition, Matossian Eye Associates offers the Crystalens™, the only accommodating implant that delivers distance and excellent intermediate vision.


This Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) manufactured intraocular lens implant (IOL) is new to the market as an FDA-approved multifocal lens. Unlike a multifocal, the Symfony® and Symfony® Toric lenses offer extended range of vision, including distance, intermediate, and adequate near, mimicking a fully functional natural lens. It also boasts less halos and glare often associated with multifocal lenses. Colors are vivid due to chromatic aberration correction; this is the only IOL currently on the market that doesn’t split light - all visual ranges enjoy the same amount of light.

Toric Lenses

A toric intraocular lens corrects astigmatism (irregular shape of front surface of the eye) and allows you to be less dependent on eyeglasses. It is a monofocal lens, so it will provide clearer vision at one focal point, (usually distance). Reading glasses may still be needed. At Matossian Eye Associates, we are proud to offer multiple toric lens options, including AcrySof®, and Tecnis® Toric IOLs, which are designed to correct both cataracts and astigmatism, offering a broader range of vision than a standard monofocal lens. In addition, Matossian Eye Associates, offers the Trulign™ accommodating IOL, the only toric implant that also provides intermediate vision.

Accommodative Lenses

Accommodative lenses reduce dependence on glasses by mimicking the natural focusing ability of your eyes, making it easier to view objects at an intermediate distance, such as items that are an arm’s length away (examples include: computer monitor, dashboard, kitchen counter, plate of food). This type of lens offers a greater range of distances than a single-focus monofocal lens. Matossian Eye Associates is proud to offer two accommodative implants, Crystalens® and Trulign™, the first and only FDA-approved accommodating IOLs. Crystalens® and Trulign™ offer both distance and intermediate vision while the Trulign™ also corrects astigmatism.
