One of the most devastating injuries for our veterans is ocular t rauma from roadside bombs, mortars, and grenades. Often, v i s i o n i s p e rma n e n t l y lost. However, with the help of guide dogs, the quality of life for blind veterans can be improved. Funds from the non-profit organizations Vets Helping Heroes and America's VetDogs provide specially trained dogs to help blind veterans gain safety and independence in addition to emotional support. Always on the cutting edge, MEA is now offering genetic testing for age related macular degeneration. This test, which can be performed easily by a simple oral swab, is covered by Medicare and most insurance companies. There are two available tests both of which provide a risk analysis for developing advanced macular degeneration.
One test, Macula Risk, uses smoking history and should be used if you currently smoke or have smoked in the recent past. The second test, RetnaGene, is used for patients with a family history of macular degeneration and who do not exhibit signs of the disease themselves. If testing is recommended by your doctor, it can be performed at the time of your appointment.
The test results are usually available within weeks.
EyeDROPS is a free smart phone application for Android phones through Google Play and for iPhones through the App Store that keeps track of all of your eye medications and reminds you when to take them! You can even take a picture of the bottle which will show up on your reminder screen to help avoid confusion if you use more than one eye drop. The app also reminds you when it is time to refill your prescription.
Simply search for"EyeDROPS".
A recent study showed that reduction in blinking with computer use is associated with an increased incidence of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) or ocular surface disease. The study showed that 70% of patients who used a computer for 3 hours or longer a day suffered from MGD with symptoms that include dry eyes, eye fatigue, eyestrain, blurred or fluctuating vision.
Treatment options include warm compresses, artificial tears, Omega 3 fish oil oral supplements, medication such as Restasis® or a laser called Intense Pulse Light (IPL). As a certified Dry Eye Center of Excellence, we, at MEA, customize the required treatment plan to you.
Americans aged 65 and older are most at-risk for the development of eye disease. With our country's baby boomers totaling 78 million, a greater number than ever will face this risk.
Despite a projected 65% spike in eye disease by 2020, a study conducted by The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) found that most Americans remain unaware of the risks associated with eye disease, and that a surprising number seem relatively unconcerned about vision loss.
The AAO recommends baseline eye screenings for all adults in hopes of reducing preventable vision loss and blindness. At MEA, we recommend annual dilated eye exams. For your convenience, we have evening and Saturday hours.
Did you know that you can purchase gift cards at MEA for outof- pocket services such as cosmetic lid procedures, contact lenses, advanced technology implants and more? Do you have a friend or loved one that would like to have Botox or dermal fillers?
Gift cards can be obtained in any of our offices or ordered on our website at www.Matossianeye.com!

Matossian Eye Associates is pleased to offer the latest diagnostic test for Dry Eye Disease: Tear Osmolarity testing. It is the only objective test available to diagnose and determine the severity of your dry eyes. We collect a tiny sample of tears from each eye (with no pain whatsoever) during your office visit and measure its osmolarity, or concentration. New research shows that osmolarity numbers are associated with degrees of dry eye disease. Once we have an objective number, we will be able to design a personalized treatment plan specifically for you, and can better monitor your progress. If you suffer from red, irritated, burning eyes, or if you have tried dry eye treatments without success, tear osmolority testing may be the next step. Tear osmolarity testing is covered by most insurance plans.
Matossian Eye Associates is proud to be recognized as an Accredited Dry Eye Center by TearLab. Dry eye is a chronic condition in which there is either an insufficient quantity of tears to lubricate the eye or an unhealthy quality of tears to nourish the ocular surface. This can happen for a number of reasons, including aging, hormonal changes, side effects of certain diseases, oral medications, and other causes. That's why it is essential to get your tears analyzed by an Accredited Dry Eye Center. Matossian Eye Associates has the tools to confirm your diagnosis and develop a customized treatment plan for you. If you have any questions about dry eyes or feel you may be suffering from this condition, please call to schedule an appointment with any one of our doctors.
MEA is proud to introduce IPL, a new treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). Gritty, tired, teary eyes are one of the leading causes of decreased productivity in the workforce. Studies have shown that 1 out of 5 Americans may suffer from this condition. IPL is a new and effective treatment that targets Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a leading cause of DES. The meibomian glands are located in the eyelids and produce the oily layer of the tear film. A deficiency in this oily secretion leads to the rapid evaporation and instability of the tear film which causes dry eye problems. DES and MGD are chronic conditions that require ongoing treatment. IPL works by closing the blood vessels that secrete the inflammatory proteins that damage the Meibomian glands.
The IPL is performed in the office, takes only a few minutes and is painless. If you have been suffering from dry eye syndrome and you have not had adequate relief with your current treatment regimen, IPL may be an effective option for you. Interestingly, IPL was originally designed for skin rejuvenation but the technology has been completely reformatted for the treatment of DES. Matossian Eye Associates is now offering IPL treatments through our certified Dry Eye Center of Excellence in our Hopewell and Doylestown offices.

This year has been very eventful for my family. Our oldest son started 1st grade and our second son started preschool. My two boys have adjusted well to their schools and have been great big brothers to our newest little addition. We had a baby girl, Jiya, over the summer and I am elated to have a little pink in our home now! Thank you to all my patients for their good wishes.
This past December marked our third year on the East Coast. We are starting to enjoy the changing seasons but still look forward to our short trips back to Southern California.
Wishing you sunny days ahead.
