Astigmatism refers to the shape of the cornea, the clear dome over the colored iris. Instead of the cornea being round like a basketball, it is shaped more like a football. Astigmatism is a very common eye condition. The greater the amount of astigmatism, the more it affects the vision. Eyeglasses or contacts are prescribed to correct astigmatism in order to achieve clear vision.

For those who are undergoing Cataract surgery, astigmatism can be corrected at the time of surgery. One method is through advanced technology intraocular lenses (IOLs) called Toric IOLs. Another method is through a Limbal Relaxation Incision (LRI) performed during the cataract surgery. Either an LRI or a Toric IOL is used to correct astigmatism if the patient wishes to decrease dependency on eyeglasses or contacts after cataract surgery.
