Enjoy the Sun and Avoid the Dangers of UV Rays

Constantly exposing your eyes to direct sunlight might be more harmful than you think.

Studies from around the world are now showing us that long-term exposure to sunlight is one of the biggest risk factors for many different vision problems, ranging from cataracts to macular degeneration.

Wearing the right sunglasses when you go outside will reduce your risk of those issues and improve your overall comfort. Let’s take a quick look at a few more reasons why you should invest in high-quality sunglasses this summer.

Eyesight and Sunlight

Standing in direct sunlight for a few minutes every day is one of the best ways to produce vitamin D. That being said, UV rays can eventually damage your eyes.

Over time, those rays might create a clouding of the eyes known as cataracts. They will also deteriorate the retinas and burn the corneas.

The most effective way to protect your eyes from UV rays is to invest in sunglasses that offer 99 percent or 100 percent UV protection. If you have a child who spends quite a bit of time outdoors, buy a pair of sunglasses for them as well. When combined with wide-brimmed hats, the right sunglasses can prevent significant eye damage from UVA and UVB rays.

Even When It’s Cloudy

“I really only need sunglasses when it’s sunny, right?” While this seems logical, the truth is that even on cloudy days, UV rays can pass through clouds and damage your eyes.

Most people like to wear lighter tinted sunglasses on cloudy days, so just be sure the lenses have UV protection. Remember, it’s not how light or dark the sunglasses are, it’s whether or not they have the UV protection.

Sunglasses are much more than a popular accessory. Investing in a good pair will protect your eyes this summer and in the long run as well.
