Rubbing Your Eyes: Harmless or Harmful?

When you feel tired or have dry or irritated eyes, you may rub your eyes without thinking about it. While this can stimulate your tear glands to produce additional moisture to relieve the discomfort in your eyes, it can also become harmful to your eyes.

Let’s take a look at a few of the issues that can arise from rubbing your eyes.

Dangerous Eye Infections

An eye doctor will tell you that applying frequent pressure to the eyes can damage the sensitive iris or the sclera, the white portion of the eye. In addition, you are more likely to introduce pathogens into your eyes when you are touching the eye, and this can lead to infections such as pink eye.

Tiny Bumps or Ingrown Eyelash Hairs

Rubbing at the upper or lower eyelids can also lead to ingrown hairs or tiny bumps. These issues can interfere with your visual acuity along with making your eyes feel itchy or painful. If you develop an issue on the eyelids or the eyes, then proper eye care is essential, including using prescription eye drops or taking oral medication to eliminate an infection.

Scratching the Eye

Rubbing your eyes can scratch the cornea, leading to an opening where additional bacteria can enter the inside of the eye. If you wear contact lenses, then a scratch on the cornea can make it impossible to wear the items until the scratch heals completely. If you have any discomfort while wearing your contact lenses, then you should remove the items to sanitize the lenses before placing the items on the surfaces of your eyes.

An Older Appearance

If you want to have a youthful appearance, then avoid rubbing your eyes because it can damage the thin skin around the eye, creating dark circles or bags under the eyes. Rubbing can also remove upper or lower eyelashes that help to protect your eyes from dust. In addition, rubbing the eyes can cause blood vessels to burst in the eyes, which can also negatively affect your appearance.

Increased Optic Nerve Pressure for Those with Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition caused by excessive pressure inside the eye that can damage the optic nerve that leads to your brain. If you have this condition, then rubbing your eyes is especially dangerous because it can cause more optic nerve damage.
